Jerry Russell Hayes, 84, of Peoria, Illinois, died on March 19, 2024, at Grand View Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Peoria. Born on July 8, 1939, in Peoria to the late Russell and Dorothy Ingram Hayes, he married Kathleen Shepherd on May 8, 1959, in Bloomington, Illinois. She survives.
Jerry is also survived by daughters Cindy (Todd) Collins and Vicky (Michael) Stoughton of Peoria, grandchildren Cassandra Collins (Logan Bruce), Daniel Stoughton (Alex Loh), and Rebecca Stoughton, great grandchildren Eleanor Bruce and Evelyn Stoughton, his sister, Muriel Sunderland, nieces Christie Sunderland and Cherie (Dan) Montgomery, nephew Randy Sunderland, great-nieces Nicole Montgomery, Tristen Sunderland, and Sierra Sunderland, and great-nephew Joey Montgomery.
Jerry was employed by LR Nelson Corporation for over thirty-three years, retiring as Vice President of Engineering. He loved our cats and dogs, was an avid golfer, an enthusiastic gun collector, an amateur astronomer, and was a Past Grandmaster of Illinois Lodge # 263 A.F. & A.M. He taught Algebra and Calculus to his three grandchildren, and wrote a book entitled “Relativity for my Grandchildren”, starring all three. He possessed an insatiable curiosity and was never happier than when he learned something new.
Cremation rights have been accorded, and a celebration of Jerry’s life is planned for the near future. Donations may be made in Jerry’s name to the Peoria Humane Society and condolences left at illinicremation.com.
